Ministry of Clouds Mataro 2013
Opulent, seductive red of immense character. I think they refer to this as a ‘ripper’ down under.
Producer: Ministry of Clouds
Mclaren Vale, Australia
Julian Forwood and Bernice Ong have absolutely nailed it with this Mataro (all of their wines are fab, and others are likely to appear at Vintrepid) They are a lovely couple who having worked for years at some of the biggest wine companies in Australia, wanted to set out on their own. Ministry of Clouds is the result. Having close relationships with growers across South Australia (and beyond) has enabled them access to some incredible parcels of fruit. Mataro is known as Mouvedre and Monastrell in Europe and is not often seen as a single varietal, more often used as a blending grape. Here in Mclaren Vale they source from an incredible old vine plot and the results are stunning. It’s quite rich and opulent, but it has the spicy, slightly rustic notes that Mataro is so good at. It is a hugely classy and interesting bottle of wine. Much, much pleasure to be had!

Full bodied, rich styles of red. Wines from the Southern Rhone like Chateauneuf du Pape.
At its best
It will benefit from a decant if possible, or a vigorous swirling in a large glass.
It’s crying out for a bit of charred meat due to the subtle smoky edge. A classic burger would be spot on
Organic with minimal intervention wine-making
